BREAKING: Dan Harmon No Longer 'Community' Showrunner
by Andy NeuenschwanderYou can bet that Twitter will be buzzing about this one: Dan Harmon is out as the "Community" showrunner. Harmon, who created the show and has seved as showrunner for the past three seasons, has been replaced, according to AV Club.
While "Community" was renewed for a fourth (short) season recently, it looks as though the past three seasons of poor ratings have come back to bite Harmon, whom Sony is reportedly replacing with David Guarascio and Moses Port, who worked on "Happy Endings" (another fine show with less than stellar ratings).
Perhaps Harmon had it coming, and perhaps this isn't too much of a shock: the ratings have never been good for "Community," and while the style and voice of the show has been brilliant throughout the show's three seasons on the air, the show remains fairly unaccessible to new viewers, in part thanks to its high-concept episodes.
In a way, "Community" is a lot like Harmon himself: at times brimming with genius, but also a bit unstable. Harmon recently caused a stir when he played an angry voicemail he had received from Chevy Chase to a small crowd in Los Angeles, only to have the story make waves on the Internet. The resulting interest revealed that Harmon and Chase had been in a feud earlier in the show's history, and that the two had been equally outspoken about their disagreements.
It is unclear whether Harmon was replaced due to ratings, or due to his conduct. What is clear is that the show will be lacking the voice that shaped it into something truly unique, outlandish, emotional, personal, heartbreaking and heartwarming. Fortunately, Harmon is likely to stay on as a consulting producer, so hopefully the next half-season order won't miss him too much.
